If you are looking to own a pet hedgehog in the near future, one of the most important aspects of keeping your hedgie healthy will be a proper diet. It is a common question we receive right off the bat…“what do hedgehogs eat?”.
Hedgehogs Eat High-Quality Dry Cat Food with a Main Ingredient of Chicken
In nature, wild hedgehogs are insectivores and feed off of wild bugs and insects. However the hedgehogs we keep as pets are far removed from the wild, and risk getting parasites if they eat wild bugs.
Therefore, we recommend feeding your pet hedgehog high-quality cat food that has a first ingredient of chicken (not corn, meat by products, etc). Currently our cat food brand of choice is Purina ONE Tender Selects Blend with Real Chicken, and our hedgehogs really enjoy it.
You should use an adult formula cat food with protein content between 34-38% and fat content between 9-14%. Many brands contain too much protein or too much fat for your pet hedgehog.
Do not feed your hedgehogs canned cat food on a regular basis. This can lead to dental problems later on.
How Much Should I Feed My Hedgehog?
We feed our hedgehogs 1 – 2 tablespoons of dry cat food once a day (approximately 100 calories). However you will need to keep an eye on your hedgehog to make sure they are not gaining weight. If a hedgehog cannot form into a prickly ball, then it is too heavy and feeding should be reduced slightly.
You can give your pet hedgehog some tasty treats on occasion to add some variety to their diet.
Recommended hedgehog treats include:
- boiled chicken
- scrambled / hard boiled eggs
DO NOT feed your hedgehog any of the following:
- grapes and raisins: known to be toxic to hedgehogs
- nuts: can be a choking hazard
- wild insects: risk of parasite infection
If you hedgehog does not like any of the above treats, do not worry. Hedgehogs can sometimes be very picky eaters and are quite content with their regular diet of dry cat food.
